Ambu Bag

An Ambu bag (short for Artificial Manual Breathing Unit) is a manual resuscitator used to provide positive pressure ventilation to individuals who are not breathing or not breathing adequately. It's a critical piece of emergency and anesthesia equipment.

Components of an Ambu Bag:

1. Self-inflating bag The main squeezable component.

2. One-way valve Ensures air flows in the correct direction.

3. Face mask Seals around the patients nose and mouth.

4. Oxygen reservoir Optional; increases the concentration of oxygen delivered.

5. Oxygen inlet Connects to an oxygen supply.

Common Uses:

• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

• During anesthesia induction and recovery

• Transporting patients who need respiratory support

• Emergency situations (e.g., drowning, drug overdose, cardiac arrest)

How to Use:

1. Position the patient and open the airway (head-tilt chin-lift or jaw-thrust).

2. Place the mask over the patients nose and mouth.

3. Squeeze the bag every 56 seconds for adults (1012 breaths per minute), or every 35 seconds for children/infants.

4. Observe chest rise to confirm effective ventilation.
